Meredith & Evangeline, moments after birth, Charlottesville, VA, June 5, 2012.
Our sweet Liney turned one yesterday. She has four teeth, an adorably raspy voice, and last week she started walking across the room.
One year ago she arrived. She came out frank breech on the bathroom floor and only minutes after our dear midwife ran up the stairs to join us. The homebirth was intentional but the details were rather surprising.
My sister, who had been supporting us for a couple of hours that afternoon, took this picture from the doorway just after I scooped up our baby girl for the first time. I have been staring at this photograph for days now. I marvel at this moment--this finite window when we were still tethered together. Her wide-mouthed cry, my unbroken gaze, both of us probably wondering what the heck just happened. This must be one of my most favorite pictures ever. Thank you, Ellie.
I'm writing Evangeline's birth story this week and, as with her sister's, it is another labor of love. Words come slowly for monumental events. Or maybe they come slowly because I let these stories simmer for a year.
One year. What the heck just happened, Tiny?
We love you so much. Happy birthday.
